Where does the money go?

For more than 50 years, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick has led a mission to eliminate heart disease and stroke, and reduce their impact through research, promotion of healthy living and advocacy. Since 1952, Canada's mortality rate from heart disease and stroke has decreased by 70 per cent - a remarkable achievement made possible in part by the efforts of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick.

However, as we plan for the future, we are mindful of a new set of challenges - challenges unlike those faced in our past. They include an aging population, increasingly pervasive levels of heart disease and stroke, and unprecedented rates of obesity and physical inactivity. Millions of Canadians are still at risk, and will be, for generations to come. The impact of these diseases affects individuals, families, friends, and entire communities across the province each day.

Every community in New Brunswick is touched by the research supported by the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Since 1956, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada has invested more than $1 BILLION in leading-edge heart and stroke research. Although the investments that we've made have contributed to new innovations and new opportunities for people living with heart disease and stroke, one in three deaths in Canada are still due to heart disease and stroke. There is still so much more to do.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation funds more than 900 research teams in medical institutes, universities and hospitals across the country. From establishing the world's first coronary care unit, to identifying that simple aspirin could prevent heart attack, to developing new technologies that detect stroke, to treating babies born with congenital heart defects, the Foundation has helped set the pace for scientific advances by funding world-class research.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick knows what's needed, but the rate of action is directly impacted by the donations secured. The Foundation relies solely on the generous hearts of New Brunswickers to support the initiatives and research that continues to make life-changing discoveries. By working with New Brunswickers to confront challenges that lie ahead, we will continue to lead the way in the fight against heart disease and stroke. New discoveries, exciting innovations, life-saving research, and committed contributors have defined our past, and with your support, will continue to guide our future.
